[아시아경제 김유리 기자] Regarding the return of the United States as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, China said, “If the United States continues to politicize human rights issues with double standards and oppress other countries, it will face strong opposition.”

When asked about the US’ return to the Human Rights Council on the 15th and the US’s decision to focus on human rights in China on the 15th, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhao Lijian said, “I have a new memory of the United States’ announcement of its withdrawal from the Human Rights Council three years ago.”“What the United States really needs to do is correct the serious human rights violations committed at home and abroad as soon as possible and do a good job in the global human rights work,” he said.

“We hope that the United States will play a positive role in advancing the work of the UN Human Rights Council by practicing multilateralism, engaging in constructive dialogue and cooperation with all parties,” he said.

The United States was elected as the next member of the UN Human Rights Council in a vote held at the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on the 14th (local time), and will be able to start a three-year term as a member from January 1 next year. It is the official comeback after three and a half years after withdrawing from the UN Human Rights Council during the Donald Trump administration.


US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in a statement regarding the return, “As a member of the Human Rights Council, for the first time, we focus on what can be achieved in places where the situation is dire, such as Afghanistan, Myanmar, China, Ethiopia, Syria and Yemen. will fit,” he said.
