China’s birth rate hits record low last year

Last year, China’s newborn birth rate again hit an all-time low.

According to the Statistical Yearbook of the National Bureau of Statistics of China, the birth rate, which means the number of newborns per 1,000 population, stood at 8.52 last year, Chinese media reported.

The newspaper reported that it was the lowest birth rate since 1978 and fell below 10 for the first time.

China’s birth rate was 12.95 children in 2016, a slight increase from the previous year, but it has been declining every year from 12.43 to 10.94 and thereafter to 10.48.

Chinese media analyzed that COVID-19, a decrease in women of childbearing age, and an increase in the cost of marriage education had a complex effect.
