China’s coal production this year is at an all-time high… Realizing ‘Shake’ Carbon Reduction Goal

January-November production 4.09 billion tonnes… 9.7% increase from last year

(Shenyang = Yonhap News) Jong-guk Reporter Park = The world’s largest producer and consumer of coal, China’s coal production reached an all-time high, the People’s Daily, an organ of the Communist Party of China, reported on the 30th.

According to reports, China’s coal production from January to November this year reached 4.09 billion tons, an increase of 9.7% compared to the same period last year, reaching an all-time high.

The People’s Daily reported that China’s four main coal centers, Shaanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, and Xinjiang, produced 81% of the total, serving as a ‘main force’ to stably increase coal production and supply.

Even this month, until the 15th, an average of 12.51 million tons per day was added across China for a total of 190 million tons.

In particular, Shaanxi Province, which accounts for 33% of China’s coal production, produced a total of 1.3 billion tons from the beginning of this year to the 27th, an increase of 107 million tons from last year, and an increase of more than 100 million tonnes for two consecutive years.

In addition, it signed a medium to long-term contract to supply 629.58 million tons of coal for power generation, exceeding the government’s allocated supply target of 620 million tons, leading energy security and social development, according to the People’s Daily.

It was also highlighted that Shaanxi Province has made efforts to increase coal production and stable supply by organizing a special task force to ensure energy supply, closely checking coal production, new production capacity, and coal supply for power generation.

In addition, People’s Daily emphasized that China’s coal stock for power generation reaches 176 million tons, which can be used for 24 days, which can ensure economic development and stable winter heating.

The intention seems to be to promote the fact that the energy crisis, such as power cuts and heating supply disruptions that occurred last year after excessive reductions in coal production and its use to reduce carbon emissions, will not happen again this year.

As the production and use of coal continues to increase, there are observations that the achievement of ‘double coal’, which is the goal of realizing carbon neutrality that China has declared, may be hindered.

Shuangtan is China’s road map for reducing carbon emissions, which has promised the international community that it will reach the peak of carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

China has also set a goal of increasing the share of non-fossil energy to 25% by 2035.

To this end, it expands the production of new and renewable energy such as solar and wind energy, and increases the supply of new energy vehicles such as electric vehicles and hydrogen vehicles through subsidy support.

However, as hydropower plants in Sichuan, the hub of hydroelectric power generation, suffer disruptions in power generation due to severe drought and heat waves that hit for the first time in 60 years this summer, coal production and the production and use of coal are increase.
