Shanghai, China’s economic capital, which had adhered to ‘precise quarantine’, could not withstand the surge in the number of corona19 infections and entered a phased lockdown from the 28th. Tesla’s Shanghai plant, the world’s largest electric car maker, also temporarily suspended operations. As of the previous day, China recorded the highest number of new confirmed cases on record.

Shanghai City announced that the city would be divided into east and west along the Huangpu River, blocking the east side of the Huangpu River from 5 am on the 28th and the rest of the west from 3 am on the 1st of the following month for four days each. During lockdown, all residents of more than 20 million will be tested for nucleic acids. If you do not take the test, the smartphone health code turns yellow, making it virtually impossible to move thereafter.

During the lockdown, everyone must stay at home. All modes of transport, including private cars and taxis, are also prohibited. Except for essential designated industries such as electricity, water, telecommunications, and parcel delivery, all companies are required to work from home. As the news of the lockdown became known, local residents such as large supermarkets in Shanghai flocked to buy daily necessities, resulting in a shortage of some items. The city of Shanghai has recently returned to a total lockdown as the number of new infections has surged. The number of new infections in Shanghai is increasing rapidly, with 1582 on the 24th, 2269 on the 25th, 2,678 on the 26th, and 3,500 on the 27th.

In accordance with the Shanghai lockdown policy, Tesla temporarily suspended the operation of its first overseas production facility in Shanghai. The factory is located east of the Huangpu River, which will be closed from the 28th. Tesla has not announced when it will resume. The Shanghai plant is a core facility that produced 484,000 units, more than half of Tesla’s global sales last year.

China’s National Health Commission announced on the previous day that there were 6,215 new cases of COVID-19 in the mainland. It is the highest since 15,115 people on February 13, 2020 as of a single day. The previous maximum was an unusually high number due to the addition of missing cases by the Chinese health authorities at the time.
