Chinese philosopher Li Zehou dies … 80’s ‘Chinese spiritual teacher’

Chinese philosopher and aesthetician Li Zehou (李澤厚) has passed away.

According to Chinese media such as the Shining News on the 3rd, Li Zhao Lin’s disciple, Zhao Lin, said that Li had died at the age of 91 in Colorado, USA on the 2nd (local time).

According to reports, the deceased was born in Hunan Province in 1930 and graduated from the Department of Philosophy at Beijing University in 1954.

Afterwards, in the 1980s, in the aesthetic craze, he was regarded as the spiritual teacher of the Chinese youth. He was also regarded as a giant in the world of Chinese thought.


In particular, during the Cultural Revolution that lasted for 10 years from 1966 to 1976, the deceased was sent to Henan Province and published major works one after another.

The deceased wrote ‘The History of Chinese Modern History’ in 1979, and additionally published ‘The History of Chinese Ancient History’ in 1985. Two years later, he published ‘The History of Contemporary Chinese Thoughts’ and completed the trilogy of ‘Li Zhehou’s History of Chinese Thoughts’.

It is well known that the deceased had conflicts with the Chinese government and the Communist Party during the 1989 Tiananmen incident.

The deceased signed a petition stating, “Don’t ignore the students’ protests calling for democracy, and listen to them,” and was designated by the Chinese authorities as a teacher of the protests. For this reason, Li Zehou’s writings were once considered ‘forbidden’.

After that, the deceased left China and settled in the United States. He also conducted research and lectures at the University of Colorado. He also worked as a guest professor at the University of Tübingen in Germany and the University of Michigan and Wisconsin in the United States.
