Chinese President Xi Jinping Will Not Attend Korea-Japan-China Summit, Says President’s Office
Seoul, September 24, 2023
During a press conference held at the Office of the President in Yongsan this afternoon, an official from the Office of the Presidency disclosed that Chinese President Xi Jinping will not be attending the Korea-Japan-China summit scheduled for the end of the year.
The official clarified that even if the summit takes place as planned, the Chinese prime minister will be in attendance, emphasizing that President Xi’s visit to Korea will be a separate event altogether.
Addressing the question of President Xi’s visit to Korea, the official stated, “Both countries are committed to facilitating President Xi’s visit, but no concrete arrangements have been finalized at this point.”
Highlighting the importance of the Korean-Chinese relationship, the official stressed, “As neighboring nations, we uphold the principles of continuous cooperation based on mutual respect, international norms, and principles.”
During a meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Han Deok-soo in Hangzhou, China, on the 23rd, President Xi expressed his willingness to support the Korea-Japan-China summit at an appropriate time, stating, “We will seriously consider” a visit to Korea.
It has been eight years since President Xi’s last visit to Korea, which took place in July 2014 during the Park Geun-hye administration. If the Korea-Japan-China summit proceeds as planned at the end of the year, it is highly likely that President Xi will visit Korea next year.
