Former candidate Cho Yeong-dal, who failed in the election for superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, was arrested on charges of providing money and other valuables.

On the 26th, chief judge Kim Jeong-min in charge of warrants at the Seoul Central District Court arrested former candidate Cho Young-dal for violating the Local Education Autonomy Act, and an arrest warrant was requested for him.

Chief Judge Kim explained the reason for issuing the arrest warrant, saying, “It is deemed that there is a significant concern about the destruction of evidence among the co-suspects according to their status and relationship in the election process.”

Former candidate Cho has been accused of unfairly providing money and other valuables beyond the limit set by law to camp activists during the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education superintendent election held last June.

Previously, Public Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutor’s Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Sang-hyun) issued an arrest warrant for former candidate Cho on charges of unfairly providing money and valuables beyond the limit set by the law for camping activists during the Seoul Superintendent of Education election process last June

Former candidate Cho, who served as presidential secretary for education and culture and dean of the College of Education at Seoul National University, failed in the June 1st local elections by coming fourth with 6.63% of the vote.

Meanwhile, the statute of limitations for violating the Public Official Election Act in the June 1st local elections expires on the 1st of the following month, so it is expected that it will be filed before the prosecution of former candidate Cho.
