Choi Ji-man (32) will not participate in the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC).

On the 6th, the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) said, “SSG outfielder Choi Ji-hoon (26) will join the Korean national team for the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC). “I told them I couldn’t compete in the WBC competition,” he said.

Choi Ji-man was included in the list of 30 final applications for WBC 2023 which was announced on the 4th of last month. Expectations were raised as a member of the big league outfield team to be formed with Kim Ha-seong and Tommy Edman, but it was ultimately canceled due to opposition from the Pittsburgh team.

Pittsburgh is known to have expressed its intention to oppose participation in the WBCI, citing Choi Ji-man’s surgical history. Accordingly, the WBCI held an injury review committee to consider whether or not Choi Ji-man should be allowed to participate in the WBC, and so decided. According to WBCI’s final decision, SSG Choi Ji-hoon was selected by WBC Korea National Team Technical Committee Chairman Beom-Hyeon Cho, the Technical Committee, and national team coach Kang-Cheol Lee.

The Technical Committee, including Technical Committee Chairman Beom-Hyun Cho, coach Kang-Cheol Lee, and the coaching staff prepared for a situation where it would be difficult for Choi Ji-man to join in the entry stage, and prepared on for selecting additional players through detailed review.

The national team submits a 30-man application to the WBCI on the 8th.
