Choi Seo-won (formerly Choi Soon-sil, 66), who was serving a prison term for the ‘Gukjeong Nongdan’ incident during the Park Geun-hye administration, was temporarily released for preventing the execution. It has been approximately 6 years and 1 month since he was arrested on November 3, 2016.

The Cheongju District Prosecutor’s Office announced on the 26th that it had made a decision to suspend the execution of Choi’s sentence for one month after holding a discussion committee on the suspension of the execution. The prosecutors explained, “The need for spinal surgery was recognized and the decision was made to suspend the execution of the sentence.”

Previously, on the 19th, Mr. Choi has applied for a stay of execution, saying, “I need spinal surgery.”

The Criminal Procedure Law states that the execution of a prison sentence can be suspended when there is concern that the execution of a prison sentence will significantly harm health or that life cannot be preserved.

At 9:35 pm on the same day, Choi left the front gate of Cheongju Women’s Prison in Chungcheongbuk-do in a wheelchair while wearing a padded black long jacket. With his mouth closed, he got into a car waiting outside the prison and left without saying anything.

Choi’s execution is stayed until midnight on the 25th of the following month. The residence was confined to a hospital in Seoul where he was receiving treatment.

In June 2020, Choi was sentenced to 18 years in prison with a fine of 20 billion won and an additional fine of 6.3 billion won for abuse of authority, obstruction of the exercise of rights, and bribery, and is currently serving a sentence at Cheongju Women’s. Prison. Choi was sentenced to a total of 21 years in prison. His sentence runs until October 2037, when he turns 85.

Mr Choi applied to the prosecution four times for a stay of execution for reasons such as declining health, but each was dismissed.

Mr. Choi’s daughter, Ms. Jeong Yoo-ra, said on her Facebook at 6:00 pm on the same day, “Thank you very much to everyone.” It is an unforgettable day. Tears flow even when I’m happy.”
