Chromebooks that only support the USI 2.0 standard clearly don’t support older USI pens | HelenTech

Most Chromebooks released for stylus pens in the last 1-2 years are compatible with the USI (Universal Stylus Initiative) standard.

The big advantage of this USI pen is that it doesn’t require pairing and you can use any pen and device that conforms to the same USI standard, especially the recently released new version USI 2.0 that charges the pen wirelessly. There were major improvements such as being able to do it, improving the recognition function of tilt and strength, and increasing the corresponding colors.

It was attractive to be able to use it on any device, but apparentlyDevices that only support the new version of USI 2.0 (Chromebook) do not support older versions of the penIt has been reported.

This issue was reported when Chrome Unboxed reviewed the “Lenovo Duet 3 Chromebook” (a new tablet-type model announced overseas in May this year) that supported USI 2.0, and was one of the existing USI stylus pens. I’m telling you that the part doesn’t work on the device.

ApparentlyThe cause of the problem is the display panel used in the “Duet3 Chromebook”InUSI 1.0 standard pens that do not support it will not work properly because it uses technology that is only supported by USI 2.0.There is a possibility.

Therefore, in the case of “HP Chromebook x2 11” which also adopts the USI 2.0 standard, the display is backward compatible, so it is also said that using a 1.0 stylus pen will not cause any problems. I have also verified this on the actual machine.

In other words, there are currently five patterns of standards supported by devices and pens, of which problems may occur when using a USI 1.0 standard stylus pen on a device that only supports 2.0. Is that there is.

In other words, at present, there are the following four patterns in the standard supported by the device and pen, and if the device supports 2.0 (only), problems may occur when using the USI 1.0 standard stylus pen. It means that there is sex.

  • [○]USI 1.0 pen x USI 1.0 device
  • [○]USI 2.0 pen x USI 1.0 device
  • [○]USI 2.0 pen x USI 2.0 device
  • [○]USI 1.0 pen x USI 2.0 (backward compatible) device
  • [X]USI 1.0 pen x USI 2.0 (new standard only) device

It’s a relief that not all USI 2.0 Chromebooks have problems, but it’s a shame that these problems happened immediately even though it’s a universal standard. In addition, it seems that the USI side is also aware of this problem and is telling that although it worked on solving it before the release, it did not reach a solution.
