From tomorrow, the warning pictures and phrases on cigarette packs will be changed even more strongly.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Promotion Organization announced that the 4th cigarette package pictures and warnings issued on June 22 will be applied for 24 months from tomorrow after a 6-month grace period.

The pictures and text were changed to emphasize the expression of potential health or disease risks to prevent familiarity and increase effectiveness.

The warning picture on the theme of second-hand smoke has changed from a picture showing the face of a child blocking his nose in cigarette smoke to a picture of a baby being fed with a baby bottle full of cigarette butts.

In addition, the picture related to early death was changed from a picture of a man smoking a cigarette in the portrait picture to a picture of the smoker’s face overlapping with cigarette smoke.

The picture/word warning system for cigarette packaging was first implemented in December 2016, and the adult male smoking rate fell from 40.7% in 2016 to 34.0% in 2020.
