The zoning of almost any Gospel family in America, taken by homeowners and local governments to protect tidy homes neighborhoods from closer development is nearby.

But some of the officers around the country are starting movements that seem to be done lightly. The Oregon legislature will consider this month a law which would exclude zoning exclusively for the homes of any family in most of the state. California billers drafted a bill to do the same. In December, Minneapolis City Council voted to complete a single household zoning throughout the city. The candidates for the Democratic Presidents of Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Julian Castro have also accepted the cause.

The zoning of any family, they say, needs to be calculated among impressive crises on housing affordability, racial inequality and climate change. But these laws take away, many home owners are afraid, and their property values ​​and their standard of living will suffer. The changes, the opponents in Minneapolis caution, nothing less than try to "bulldoze" their neighborhoods.

Today, the effect of single family zoning is widespread: 75 per cent of residential land in many American cities is illegal to build anything other than a detached family home.

This figure is even higher in many of the Sun zone's newer suburbs and cities, according to The Upshot analysis conducted with UrbanFootprint, software that reads and measures the impact of development and policy change on cities.

Minneapolis' new policy will end the zoning of any family on 70 per cent of the city's residential land, or 53 per cent of the total land. The Upshot used public zoning data compiled by UrbanFootprint to calculate this and to draw similar maps for 10 other American cities.

Such maps show the view that closer housing can be a nuisance to single-family neighborhoods as would a factory. This conviction is as old as the 1926 Supreme Court decision which upheld zoning in America.

Apartments, the court gave a warning, stopped the sun and the air. They give noise and traffic. They act as paradigms for the neighborhoods of any household – “until the residential character of the neighborhood and its desirability as a detached dwelling have been completely destroyed.”

Today, environmentalists look at the very throat density that the court focused on patterns of development spreading on gaps and automatic emissions. Planners look at it as a necessary condition to support public transit, and economists are the best way to make high-cost cities more affordable.

“One-family zoning” means that everything else is prohibited, ”said Scott Wiener, a state senator in California, speaking this spring at the Brookings Institute in Washington. “Prohibition of apartment buildings.
