Due to the lockdown imposed on the 28th (local time), in Shanghai, China, there is a struggle among citizens to stock up on daily necessities such as groceries. It is reported that citizens’ dissatisfaction is growing, especially among foreigners.

On the 30th, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that a large-scale city blockade in Shanghai to prevent the spread of Corona 19 is causing noise as supermarkets are crowded with people. The SCMP reported that, in particular, many foreigners live in Shanghai, an international financial city, and there are many dissatisfaction with the lockdown measures among them.

A British teacher who has lived in Shanghai for more than 10 years told SCMP, “I went to buy groceries late the night the lockdown was announced, and the supermarket was overflowing with people and there was a fight over the goods. He added, “There are not many items left at each mart, so I don’t know what will happen after the lockdown.

The reaction among foreigners living in Shanghai to the lockdown is mixed. Some see it as the only way to stop the health system from collapsing, while others are blatantly dissatisfied. Another British citizen, a Shanghai citizen, told the SCMP: “Shanghai is usually quiet, but I was very surprised to see so many people gathered in the supermarket around midnight.” He complained, saying, “There seems to be no plan to switch from zero corona to with corona”, saying that there is no end to the control of the Chinese authorities.

The city of Shanghai is currently implementing lockdown measures in the Pudong district, where about 5.7 million people live, centering on the Huangpu River. A Frenchman living in the Puxi district told the SCMP that “orders through delivery apps are almost unusable due to the surge in demand.”

Currently, the number of confirmed cases in Shanghai reached 4,400 a day as of the 29th, and over 10,000 people were reported last week, but authorities believe that the peak has not yet been reached.
