Starting from June, if you use disposable cups at major coffee shops and fast food restaurants across the country, you will have to pay a deposit of 300 won for each resource recycling. In addition, disposable wipes containing plastic synthetic resin will be banned in restaurants in the second half of next year.

The Ministry of Environment announced on the 24th that it would make a 40-day notice of amendments to the three sub-laws in the field of resource circulation, including the Enforcement Decree of the Act on Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources, containing such content. The key is to introduce a disposable cup deposit system at 38,000 stores nationwide from June 10 of this year. Applicable stores are △Coffee stores such as Ediya, Starbucks, A Twosome Place, △Confectionery and bakery stores such as Dunkin Donuts, Paris Baguette, and Tous Les Jours △Lotteria, Mom’s Touch, McDonald’s, Burger King, etc. Store △Gongcha, Smoothie King, Juicy and other beverages are sold. This deposit system applies to stores operated by businesses with more than 100 stores nationwide.

Consumers pay a deposit when purchasing beverages in disposable cups, and return the used cup to the store or another store that accepts a deposit system to get a deposit of 300 won back. For example, if you pay a deposit of 300 won at Starbucks to buy coffee in a disposable cup and return the empty cup to Ediya, you can get your deposit back. A deposit is also required when picking up discarded disposable cups and returning them to the store.

Environmental authorities also plan to ban the use of disposable wipes containing plastic synthetic resin in restaurants. Wet wipes for household use are not regulated. An official from the Ministry of Environment explained, “The ban on the use of synthetic resin wipes in restaurants aims to be implemented one year after the revision of the sub-decree of the Resource Recycling Act was amended and promulgated.”

Due to the amendment of this law, the use of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) packaging materials used for packaging wraps, etc. is expected to be completely banned from 2024.
