Kochi: The Kerala State Film Award-winning film ‘Android Kunjappan Version 5.25’ has been accused of plagiarism. Santosh Babusenan, President, Movement for Independent Film Association; Culture Minister Saji Cherian has lodged a complaint alleging that the film was stolen under the leadership of Sreekrishnan.
The complaint alleges that ‘Android Baby version 5.25’ copied the concept and scenes of the 2012 American film ‘Robot and Frank’, directed by Jake Schreier and scripted by Christopher Ford. Audiences who have seen both films are confirming that the allegation is true.
The complaint is against a film that has won a State Film Award and a FIPRESCI Award and has been screened at an international film festival like IFFK, which is attended by national and international cinema audiences. The Kerala Film Academy, which is the organizer of the State Film Awards and IFFK, cannot escape responsibility for the problem.
When submitting films to the Film Awards and IFFK, an affidavit stating that the work is original is submitted with the application. They also alleged that this proves that the film academy does not conduct any kind of examination other than taking an affidavit.
