Convicted spy Robert Hanssen dies in prison

Former FBI agent Robert Hansen, 79, who was convicted of spying for Russia, has been found dead in prison. Since July 17, 2002, he has been held in a maximum security prison in Florence, Colorado. Hansen was found motionless around 6:55 a.m. Monday. Emergency medical personnel tried to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries. However, Hanson’s cause of death has not been released. Hansen had been in the Lockup in Florence since July 17, 2002, after being convicted of 15 counts of espionage and sentenced to life in prison.

Over 20 years of spying for the Soviet Union and later Russia. More than $1.4 million in cash, diamonds and many other prizes were received from Russian accounts during this period. Hansen joined the FBI as a special agent in 1976 and held a number of intelligence positions with access to classified information.
