Even if you are infected with Corona 19, a new study has found that getting the vaccine helps prevent re-infection. This is the content reported on the 23rd (local time) by health medicine web magazine ‘Health Day’ based on a paper by a Danish research team published in the open medical journal PLOS Medicine.

The researchers analyzed infection and vaccine data from the Danish National Medical Record, which included all Danish residents who tested positive for the COVID-19 virus or were vaccinated between January 2020 and January 2022. It included more than 200,000 people infected with the alpha, delta and omicron mutations.

When a person with a history of infection was vaccinated, the protective effect of preventing re-infection was up to 71% during the alpha epidemic. During the delta wave, it rose to 94%. During the outbreak of Omicron, which has a strong infection, its protective effect dropped to about 60%. The protective effect has been shown to last up to 9 months.

Researcher Katrin Finderup Nilssen from the National Serum Institute (SSI) in Denmark, first author of the thesis, said, “It differed from 60 to 94% depending on the corona mutation, but the effect of the vaccine to prevent re-infection was confirmed . ” He added that people with natural immunity should also be vaccinated.

The researchers said this study will help establish future vaccination strategies. The study did not include the vaccine’s protective effect against serious illness such as death or hospitalization. The researchers said further research is needed.
