HANOI – Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who was praised for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, has resigned, blaming government corruption during the pandemic. The resignation came after the Communist Party of Vietnam announced that Phuc (68) was responsible for the fraud committed by a large group, including 2 deputy prime ministers and 3 ministers, in the distribution of Covid test kits and the operation of flight services. These are the scandals during Phuc’s time as Prime Minister between 2016 and 2021. Phuc was popular for liberalizing Vietnam and ensuring economic growth.

As part of the anti-corruption measures initiated by party leader Nguyen Phu Trong, 539 people, including deputy prime ministers, have already been expelled.

Vietnam has a system of government that gives equal power to 4 people: the Secretary of the Communist Party, the President of the country, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the Senate.
