Cricket Australia: Cummins will lead Australia now: Smith vice-captain

Sydney: Cricket Australia has named Pat Cummins as captain of the Test team. Steve Smith will be the vice-captain. The Ashes series will be the main challenge for Cummins. The Ashes series starts on December 8. Cummins became Australia’s first Test captain since 1956.

In 1956, Ray Lindwall led Australia in a match. Medium pace all-rounders Monty Noble and Jack Ryder captained Australia in the 1900s. Cummins is Australia’s 47th Test captain. Cummins will take over the captaincy after Tim Payne resigns as captain.

Cummins has been the team’s vice-captain for the past two years. Cummins made his Test debut in 2011. Cummins was 18 when he made his debut. But due to injury he had to wait until 2017 to play the next match.

The player is currently playing in all three formats. Smith is set to make his official debut in Australian cricket in 2018 after being convicted of ball-scratching.
