CRYOH&I develops a metal material testing machine for liquid hydrogen storage

[월간수소경제 이종수 기자] CryoH&I, the only manufacturer of cryo vacuum pumps for semiconductor displays in Korea, announced on the 5th that it has succeeded in developing a new device capable of cryogenic freezing at minus 253 degrees Celsius.

CryoH&I explained that this device can test and evaluate the compression and tensile properties of metal materials at minus 253 degrees Celsius. Potential customers who can utilize this device are metal material developers for liquid hydrogen storage and transport containers.

According to CryoH&I, when hydrogen is cooled to minus 252.7 degrees Celsius, it becomes liquid hydrogen. Since liquid hydrogen occupies only 1/600 of the volume compared to when it is in a gaseous state, it is possible to significantly reduce costs for storage and transportation.

In order to withstand the cryogenic environment below -253 degrees Celsius, the durability of the storage container must be high. In the past, expensive liquefied helium (-269 degrees below zero) or expensive cryogenic freezers produced in Japan and the United States have been imported and used in test equipment to evaluate materials that can withstand cryogenic temperatures.

An official from CrioH&I explained, “With this technology development, it is expected to contribute greatly to the development of cryogenic materials as well as the localization of test equipment.”

CRYOH&I’s -253 degrees Celsius cryogenic refrigeration system was jointly developed with Professor Ahn Gyu-baek’s team in the Department of Smart Mobile Convergence Systems Engineering (Ship and Ocean Engineering) at Chosun University.

Wonkyun Yang, head of technology development and head of CRYOH&I’s research center, said, “Our cryogenic freezer technology can be applied not only to the semiconductor display field, but also to advanced aerospace and bio-healthcare based on superconducting technology and quantum computing.” “We will develop refrigeration technology that can be applied to various fields in the future and become Korea’s best cryogenic refrigerator and equipment company,” he said.

CRYOHNI, established in September 2020, attracted 3 billion won in institutional investment last year. After the expansion and relocation of the new factory to the Jinwi Industrial Complex in Pyeongtaek City in 2021, it is concentrating its capabilities on developing cryogenic technology applications.
