However, yesterday, the day following the funeral of the late Bae Eun-shim, the Daegu Maeil newspaper and the Yeongnam Ilbo published advertisements praising the deceased Mr. Chun Doo-hwan.

He praised me with expressions that were embarrassing to mention.

Voices of anger erupted from all sides.

Correspondent Kwon Yoon-soo reported.

This is the Daegu ‘Maeil Newspaper’ delivered yesterday.

At the bottom of the front page, there was an advertisement titled “Dedicated to the memory of former President Chun Doo-hwan.”

The Daegu Technical High School Alumni Association, Alumni Scholarship Association, and the 100th anniversary commemorative project promotion committee put out advertisements wishing Chun Doo-hwan’s rebirth in paradise on the occasion of his 49th death.

He praised Chun Doo-hwan with the phrase “an outstanding patriot as a national leader” and “set the practical cornerstone of democracy.”

On the same day, the same content was published as a full-page advertisement on the last page of ‘Yeongnam Ilbo’, a daily newspaper in Daegu.

Yesterday, the funeral of the late Eun-shim Bae, the mother of Han-yeol Lee, who devoted her life to the democratization movement, was being held.

In a statement, the Gwangju-Jeonnam Citizens’ Federation for Democratic Press said, “We condemn the Daegu Maeil Shimbun and Yeongnam Ilbo for posting advertisements praising Chun Doo-hwan during Bae Eun-shim’s funeral.”

In March of last year, the Maeil Shimbun received outrage by reproducing the figures and composition of a photo of the 5/18 martial law military in a cartoon criticizing the government.

96 civil society organizations in Daegu and North Gyeongsang held a press conference in front of the Maeil Newspaper.

“I can’t believe that the DNA for the mission of the press has been lost to re-publishing it without reflection even though it has been humiliated.”

Civil society groups urged the two newspapers to apologize to the victims and their bereaved families of the 518 Democratization Movement, take responsibility for their advertisements, and take measures to prevent recurrence.
