(São Paulo = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Jae-soon = The so-called ‘vampire fish’ attacking fish and people in rivers in the Amazon rainforest is increasing.

According to Globu TV in Brazil on the 18th (local time), it was confirmed that a small fish called ‘kanjiru’ digs into the body of another fish to suck blood or parasitize it in the gills, causing the fish to die.

In particular, this fish enters the body through the urethra and anus of people who swim in rivers to cool off, and then sucks the blood.

In fact, more than 10 cases of ‘vampire fish’ damage have been reported in the state of Hondonia in northern Brazil this year.

If these fish enter the body, they must be surgically removed.

Urology doctor Oazimiu Monteiro said, “After swimming in a river in the Amazon region, there are a lot of patients who visit the hospital saying they can’t urinate with abdominal pain.” “We found and removed the fish through surgery.”

Biologist Adriano Marcins said that Kanjiru, which lives only in rivers in the Amazon rainforest, has a small head and very soft body, making it difficult to detect when attacking a human body.
