Thiruvananthapuram: KPCC President K Sudhakaran MP has said that the Silver Line Detailed Plan Document (DPR) released following the notice issued to the Chief Minister by Anwar Sadat MLA for violating his rights is ten times more dangerous than expected. Recognizing the danger, the government has kept the DPR secret till now.
The government thought it could use technology such as the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of Air Force and classified information to intimidate locals and create an easy path. With the release of the DPR, it became clear that the stand taken by the UDF and the Congress was 100 per cent correct. Sudhakaran said this would further strengthen the agitation against the project.
The DPR has done its utmost to make all the existing transport systems in the state a failure. The decision taken at the meeting of the Department of Economic Affairs held in Delhi on August 18, 2020 should be read in conjunction with this. In Kerala, 12 projects worth `5,900 crore are in progress and 8 projects worth` 37,300 crore are in progress. It was decided to complete the ongoing projects and abandon other projects and transfer the funds to other states. The government has scuttled other Kerala projects to provide assistance for the Silver Line project.
It is clear that the project will have a severe impact on the environment of the state, irrespective of the effects of continuous floods and climate change in Kerala. However, an agency in Thiruvananthapuram watered down the government’s position by conducting a quick, very dry and inadequate environmental impact study. This is not even an accredited agency.
The DPR has undergone a number of twists and turns to minimize the cost of the project. As the number of passengers increased dramatically, so did the cost of construction. Sudhakaran said the proposal not to improve existing roads or railway lines and to impose toll on roads was also detrimental to the state.
