“Dementia diagnosis before age 65, suicide risk ↑”

Of these, 14,515 (2.4%, average age of death, 47.4 years, men 74.8%) committed suicide, of which 95 (1.9%) were diagnosed with dementia.

Overall, there was no significant association between dementia diagnosis and suicide. Those diagnosed with dementia had a suicide rate of just 0.5% higher than others.

However, the risk of suicide within the first 3 months after a diagnosis of dementia was 2.47 times higher. Those diagnosed with dementia before the age of 65 had a 2.82 times higher risk of suicide.

Those diagnosed with dementia before the age of 65 were 6.69 times more likely to commit suicide within 3 months of diagnosis.

Timothy Schmute, a psychiatrist at Yale University School of Medicine in the US, said that being diagnosed with dementia can make you feel like you don’t want to be a burden on your family because dementia is incurable, it doesn’t get better, it just is getting worse.

This leads to despair and loss of self-control, leading to suicidal thoughts.

The results of this study were published in the latest issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association – JAMA Neurology.
