Lee Jae-myung, Democratic Party Leader, to Appear Before Prosecution Despite Opposition
Democratic Party spokesman expresses regret over unprecedented mandatory summons
Seoul, Korea – Lee Jae-myung, the head of the Democratic Party of Korea, is set to appear before the prosecution on the 9th of this month, facing allegations of involvement with the Ssangbangwool group’s plans to aid North Korea. The news was confirmed by Democratic Party spokesman Park Seong-joon during a briefing at the National Assembly on the morning of the 7th.
Expressing his disappointment, Spokesman Park revealed that the prosecution had issued an unprecedented compulsory summons to Lee, forcing him to forgo his duty to attend the regular National Assembly session. “We regret the prosecution’s decision,” stated Park.
However, Park emphasized that the Democratic Party would not be deterred. “Even when they resort to underhanded tactics, we will continue to move forward with integrity,” he added. “CEO Lee will appear before the prosecution on Saturday, the 9th, immediately after the government’s questioning concludes, and confidently face this baseless summons under the Yoon Seok-yeol regime.”
This change in schedule comes after CEO Lee initially announced his intention to attend the prosecution on the 12th. However, due to the prosecutors’ request for an earlier appearance between the 7th and the 9th, CEO Lee adjusted his plans accordingly, ensuring the subpoena investigation proceeds as planned.
This will mark CEO Lee’s fifth appearance before the prosecution. The ongoing controversy revolves around alleged payments made to North Korea. Former Ssangbangwool Group Chairman Kim Seong-tae is said to have sent $5 million for a project supporting the establishment of a North Korean smart farm, as well as an additional $3 million to fund a visit by the governor of Gyeonggi-do province to North Korea. The alleged payments were supposedly made at the request of Lee Hwa-young, the former vice governor of Gyeonggi-do in 2019.
Prosecutors are investigating Lee, who was then serving as governor of Gyeonggi-do, on charges of bribery involving a third party.
