[Los Angeles, 23rd Reuters]-National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched a spacecraft from California on the 23rd to demonstrate the world’s first planetary defense system designed to avoid asteroids colliding with Earth.

The spacecraft “DART” was mounted on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket and launched from the Bandenberg Space Force Base north of Los Angeles.

DART will spend 10 months aiming at the asteroid “Didymos”, which is about 11 million kilometers from the earth, and will experiment to see if it can change its orbit by colliding with an orbiting satellite at high speed.

The state of the collision is photographed by the camera mounted on the collision body and the mini spacecraft emitted from DART, and the image is transmitted to the earth.

The asteroids used in this experiment are not actually threatened by a collision with the Earth, and are considerably smaller than the asteroids that are thought to have extinct dinosaurs 66 million years ago, but they are about the size of a soccer field.
