Mysore: A young man committed suicide by setting his girlfriend on fire inside his car for refusing to marry her. The tragedy took place on Friday in Therampally village in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district.

The deceased have been identified as Srinivas, 27, a resident of Mampally and Kanchana, 25, a nurse at the Chamarajanagar District Hospital. The two have been close for a few years. Police said Srinivasan had repeatedly forced Kanchana into marriage but Kanchana had refused.

Kanchana always wanted to wait a little longer. Meanwhile, friends had told Srinivasan that Kanchana’s family would not agree to the marriage as he was a tractor driver. Following this, Srinivas attempted to hang himself three months ago. The family was rushed to a hospital shortly after the suicide attempt, but his life was spared.

On Friday evening, Srinivas reached the hospital in his uncle’s car and took Kanchana to Therampally lake. Police said the car’s doors were then locked and the petrol in the vehicle was set on fire, leaving Kanchana and himself dead. Locals rushed to the spot but could not escape as the doors were locked. Chamarajanagar District Police Chief Divya Sara Thomas, Additional SP Sundar Raj, Collegal DYSP A police team led by Nagaraj visited the spot. Mampally police have registered a case against Kanchana’s brother Karthik.
