[메디컬투데이=이승재 기자] Research has shown that feeling full while eating healthy nutrients is effective in weight loss.

A study was published in The Annals of Family Medicine that investigated whether a diet that provides satiety through healthy nutrient intake or a diet that restricts calories is more effective for weight loss.

The prevalence of obesity in the United States increased from 30.5% to 41.9% between 1999 and 2020. Since obesity is significantly associated with metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, it is important to eliminate obesity through diet.

Diet methods are generally divided into two types. There are ways to limit the amount of calories you eat, and there are ways to feel full like a normal diet but control the ratio of nutrients.

According to previous studies, a diet that maintains fullness through a high-protein, high-fiber diet is more effective for weight loss than a calorie-restricted diet. As such, the fact that satiety and satisfaction are important in diet is becoming increasingly known through various studies.

Researchers asked 261 overweight adults to decide whether a calorie-restricted diet or a satiety-restricted diet was more effective for weight loss.

They randomly divided the participants into two groups, each participating in a different weight loss program. One group took part in the National Diabetes Prevention Program and ate a calorie restricted diet. Another group took part in the ‘MyPlate’ programme, where they ate a healthy diet full of nutrients.

As a result of the study, 59.1% of those who took part in the MyPlate program managed to go on a diet, and their waist circumference decreased by 3.15cm on average. On the other hand, among those who took part in the diabetes prevention programme, 53.5% managed to go on a diet, and their waist circumference decreased by an average of 2.72cm.

What is notable is that both groups felt full through the diet. Both groups also reported better quality of life and better mental health as they lost weight.

From these results, the researchers concluded that feeling full through a healthy nutritional intake is more effective for dieting than calorie restriction.
