(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Hong-seok Ahn = Tennis star Novak Djokovic (Serbia) was confirmed to have tried to get a ‘vaccine exemption’ for the 2022 Australian Open, based on the fact that he contracted the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) a month ago. .

Major foreign media, including AFP, reported that Djokovic’s lawyer made this claim in the Australian Federal Court on the 8th.

Djokovic’s lawyer said, “Djokovic tested positive for a gene amplification (PCR) test on the 16th of last month.”

Djokovic, who arrived at Melbourne International Airport on the 5th to participate in the Australian Open, the first major event of the year, is currently staying in a quarantined hotel after being denied entry.

Djokovic has taken legal action claiming to have obtained a vaccination waiver from the Victorian government and the Games Organizing Committee, but it is unknown what the basis for the exemption was so far.

Djokovic seems to be claiming that he meets the reasons for the vaccine exemption as he has antibodies in his body less than a month after being infected with COVID-19.

According to Djokovic’s lawyer, Djokovic did not develop fever or respiratory symptoms for 72 hours 14 days after being diagnosed with the virus.

The defense also claimed that Djokovic did not try to enter the country blindly, but moved to Australia after checking whether it was administratively possible to enter the country.

Djokovic claims that on the 1st, he received a document from the Australian immigration office stating that he met the entry requirements.

Still, the Australian government unreasonably barred Djokovic from entering the country.

Djokovic’s defense attorney also asked the court to let Djokovic leave the quarantined hotel so he can train for the Australian Open.
