Dual captaincy is not new to India. In 2007, when Anil Kumble was the Test captain, MS Dhoni led Team India in ODIs and Twenty20s. But with Dhoni emerging as one of the best captains in world cricket, India did not think this way again. Kohli became the Test captain after Dhoni retired from Test cricket. Kohli has always played under Dhoni in ODIs and Twenty20s.
7 Tests, 6 captains!
India also have a history of changing captains six times in seven Tests. This was in the series 1958–59 against the West Indies and England. Ghulam Ahmad was named captain against the Windies but withdrew from the first Test. Polly Umrigar then led the team. In the next Test, Ghulam returned as captain but India lost by 203 runs.
Ghulam resigned after losing the Test by an innings and 336 runs in Kolkata. Vinoo Mankad captain in the Madras Test after Umrigar refused to take over the captaincy due to differences in team selection. India lost. Mankad has been ruled out of the Delhi Test due to food poisoning. India drew that Test. The series lost 0–3. Mankado was not in the squad for the subsequent England series. Captain as Dutta Gaikwad. Pankaj Roy captained the side in the next Test as he too fell ill.
