Doha: Qatar has decided to suspend imports of some vegetables from Lebanon following the discovery of the presence of dangerous chemicals and E. coli bacteria. The Ports Health and Food Control Division of the Ministry of Public Health in Qatar has issued a circular in this regard.

The move follows the detection of high levels of chemicals and E. coli bacteria in the sample tests. It has been ordered not to import such vegetables from Lebanon from next month. These leaves are eaten uncooked by locals and foreigners in Qatar.

A large percentage of the samples imported in the last few months were found to contain E-coli bacteria and the presence of some chemical residues, media sources said, citing media sources. Qatar, one of the most important countries for food security, has state-of-the-art systems for quality control of imported goods.

Qatar had yesterday ordered that fruits and vegetables should not be imported without prior permission. The order will come into effect from December 1. The measure is to ensure the quality of the products and to avoid wastage by importing more vegetables and fruits than required.
