Electric vehicle battery market share, CATL’s leader is solid… LG Ensol shrinks

[이코노믹리뷰=김보배 기자] In the global electric vehicle battery market, while China’s CATL firmly maintained the No. 1 position, LG Ensol’s market share decreased slightly.

According to SNE Research on the 29th, global electric vehicle (EV, PHEV, HEV) battery usage sold in January to November this year was 250GWh, up 112.1% from 118.3GWh in the same period last year. This high-growth trend is expected to continue until at least December, more than doubling the annual growth rate.

Overall, Chinese battery makers continued to make strides, while the three domestic battery makers also grew by more than double digits. LG Ensol’s battery usage from January to November was 51.5GWh, up 90% from the same period of the previous year, while SK On (14.6GWh) and Samsung SDI (11.3GWh) rose 119.3% and 60.7%, respectively.

In terms of market share, CATL expanded from 24.1% in January to November last year to 31.8% in January to November this year, solidifying its No. LG Energy Solutions maintained second place, but its market share shrank from 22.9% to 20.5%.

SK On’s market share rose 0.2 percentage points from last year’s 5.6% to this year’s 5.8%, ranking fifth, while Samsung SDI’s market share decreased from 6% to 4.5%, ranking sixth.

A significant number of Chinese companies led the market growth, led by CATL and BYD. BYD’s market share expanded from 6.5% to 9% in one year, and CALB expanded from 2.3% to 2.7%, respectively. Guoxuan’s share also increased from 1.7% to 2.1%.

On the other hand, Japanese-based Panasonic maintained third place, but its market share was reduced from 19.4% to 12.5%, and the gap with second-place LG Ensol widened from 3.5 percentage points last year to 8 percentage points this year.
