Original series produced by online video services (OTT) such as Netflix swept the top prize at the ‘Emmy’, which is given to the best TV show in the United States.

At the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles, California, USA on the 19th (local time), Netflix The Crown for ‘Best Drama Series’, Netflix Queens Gambit for ‘Best Miniseries’, Apple TV+ Ted Lasso for ‘Best Comedy Series’ were selected for each.

This is the first time a Netflix original work has won the Emmy Award for Best Drama or Miniseries.

From 2013 to last year, Netflix nominated 30 works for the Best Award in each category, but failed every time. Prior to The Crown, the only streaming service work that was selected for the best drama series was Hulu’s ‘Handmade’s Tale’, which won the 2017 award.

This is Netflix’s first award for OTT to receive the Best Miniseries Award.

All of the Best Actor and Actress in a Drama Series came from The Crown. Josh O’Connor won Best Actor in a Drama Series for her role as Prince Charles in The Crown, while Olivia Colman won Best Actress for her role as Queen Elizabeth II in the same drama.

Ewan McGregor for Best Actress in a Miniseries for Netflix’s ‘Halston’ went to Kate Winslet, the main character of ‘Mare of Easttown’ by Wiip, an American production company recently acquired by JTBC Studios Korea. Best Actor and Best Actress in a Comedy Series went to Ted Lasso’s Jason Sudeikis and Hanks’ Gene Smart, respectively.

The Associated Press commented that this year’s OTT service programs swept the Emmy Awards, saying, “It has made clear the growing importance of streaming services in the broadcasting industry.”
