On the afternoon of the 25th, at Xita Market in Shenyang, China, where Korean restaurants and side dish shops are concentrated, two Han Chinese women in their 20s were evaluating the taste while eating taiyaki and tteokbokki from disposable containers.

They said their turn had finally come after standing in line for about 20 minutes, “I like that it’s not too spicy or salty,” he said.

Since Korean food is booming among young Chinese people, the Shita Market area is busy with people on weekends.

It’s hard to get a seat at a Korean restaurant without a reservation, and shops selling kimchi and Korean side dishes are busy taking orders from customers.

The market is so crowded that people are pushed even if they are standing still.

Taiyaki, fish cake, tteokbokki, and gimbap are known as ‘must have’ items that visitors to Sita Market must try, and long lines form at every street vendor or shop.

Makgeolli, which is made and sold on the spot, is also popular, attracting many people who want to taste it or buy it.

Women prefer traditional makgeolli because of its sweet taste and low alcohol content.

Another merchant suggested, “At first, customers only flocked to shops selling Korean food, kimchi, rice cakes like Injeolmi, and gimbap, but recently taiyaki, tteokbokki, and fish cakes are also popular.”

A woman in her 30s who studied abroad in Korea said, “Wang Hong (網紅, a Chinese online influencer) introduced it as a place where you can taste Korean food on Douin, a short video platform, and Sita emerged as a place hot, and street food This is trending,” he said.

He said, “There are many young Chinese people who have fallen in love with Korea by watching Korean dramas.

He continued, “As it became known through social media, there are many people who come on an ‘expedition’ to see sights not only from Shenyang but also from other places on weekends.”

Mr. Chen, a Chinese, said, “At first, I thought this was the effect of vindictive use, just like anywhere else, but only Sita attracts customers.”

Sita, settled by Koreans who came to China during the Japanese colonial period, formed the largest Korean town in the Northeast as Koreans and ethnic Koreans flocked to it after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China.

Most of the Koreans in Shenyang, who once numbered 10,000, lived in this area.

However, the number of South Koreans in Shenyang is currently less than 1,000 as large numbers return home due to the THAAD (High Altitude Area Defense) incident and quarantine control following the Corona 19 outbreak.

Kim Man-seop (55), who runs the Korean restaurant ‘Wudang’ in Sita, said, “It’s good to see that Korean food is thriving again among Chinese people even though the relationship between Korea and China is not what it was. he used to do it. be.” And I hope that the people of both countries can respect each other and open a way of coexistence.”
