EU rejects illegal annexation of Russia, Donetsk, Luhansk… It has no legal effect.”

After Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he would annex some occupied by Ukraine, the European Union (EU) said it would not recognize it.

The European Council, at a meeting of EU leaders, said in a statement on the 30th (local time) that “we categorically reject and unequivocally condemn Russia’s illegal annexation of the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporiza and Kherson in Ukraine.”

Putin announced that the territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporiza and Kherson will be occupied since the beginning of the invasion in February. It accounts for one fifth of the total territory of Ukraine and is considered the largest territorial annexation in Europe since 1945.

The board evaluated the publication of the annex as “weakening the rules-based international order, clearly violating the fundamental rights of independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and ignoring the core principles guaranteed by the UN Charter and international law .”

“Russia is endangering global security,” he said. With this in mind, he said, “We will never recognize the illegal ‘referendum’ planned by Russia under the pretext of violating Ukraine’s independence and sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

“These decisions are null and void,” he said. “Krm Peninsula, Kherson, Zaporiza, Donetsk and Luhansk are in Ukraine,” he said.

“We will strengthen restrictions against Russia’s illegal actions,” the board said, “We will further increase pressure on Russia to end this war of aggression.” He also reaffirms his support for Ukraine.
