In relation to the Seongnam International Mafia case, it is highly probable that Lee Jae-myung, the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, who “was taking up defense without knowing that he was a gangster” was not true. This is because it was revealed that the defendant was a gangster in the judgment of the case for which he was defending, and that he had nevertheless taken up another case of the same defendant a month later.

The newspaper said that candidate Lee Jae-myung had obtained and analyzed the judgments of the cases in August 2007 and February 2008, where he served as an attorney. According to the August 2007 judgment, the court sentenced the defendant, Kim, to two years and six months in prison and three years of probation on charges of collective knife injury, confinement, joint injury, and intimidation. At the time, the court stated in the ruling that “Kim joined the Seongnam International Mafia as an activist in 2005 even though he knew it was a criminal organization.”

Kim was indicted during an investigation into the International Mafia by the prosecution in March 2007. Candidate Jae-myung Lee served as defense counsel for two members of the organization, including Kim at the time. In the judgment in this case, the court revealed that one of the candidates Lee Jae-myung served as a lawyer was a ‘leader-class’ who had been working as an international mafia group since 1998. According to the newspaper, in the judgment, former CEO Lee of ‘Coma Trade’ and another Mr. Lee, who supported candidate Lee Jae-myung, were listed as co-defendants. Despite the fact that the judgment specified the defendants as ‘gangsters’, Lee Jae-myung took on the role of defense attorney for Kim’s other case a month later.

Candidate Jae-myung Lee also said in the 2018 SBS ‘I Want to Know’ broadcast, “(the accused) claimed that he was not a gangster. He said, “My family came to me and said, ‘I am a good citizen and I am being held unfairly, so I took over the case.’ He then claimed that he accepted the case without knowing that the accused was a gangster.

The case in which Lee received an additional request following the case was the charge of perjury and false perjury by Mr. Kim. According to a judgment issued in February 2008, Kim was sentenced to a fine of 5 million won. Kim gave instructions to two members of the International Mafia, who had been drinking with two minors at a bar, to “testify that he did not drink alcohol,” and he also took part in false statements. According to the newspaper, Kim has since been arrested twice for committing more than 10 crimes as a result of international mafia activities.

The newspaper pointed out, “It’s also noticeable that Kim wrote a lot of reflective statements when candidate Lee Jae-myung took up the defense.” When the case was adjudicated in August 2007, Kim submitted a statement of reflection to the court 16 times. In the case that was sentenced in February 2008, he submitted a statement of reflection 36 times.
