Family Law Reform: Cuba Holds Referendum | World | Deshabhimani

HAVANA > A referendum was held in Cuba with the aim of abolishing family law. The final result will be announced after five days. However, the National Electoral Commission may give preliminary results on Monday. More than 50 percent of the votes must be received to approve the new family law (Family Code). The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz Canel, said that Cuba is on a path of growth and that he hopes that the new law will be approved.

Voting for citizens living abroad had already been completed. The new law gives more rights and consideration to women, children and sexual minorities. The law gives permission for same-sex marriage, bans child marriage, protects children from divorce etc. An extensive campaign was carried out from February to April to create awareness about the new law.
