The White House responded with a strong warning.

He said he had private contacts with high-ranking Russian officials and made clear what a decisive response would mean, he said, saying the use of nuclear weapons would face devastating consequences for Russia.
He said he could not reveal how and when he had contacted high-level Russian officials, but said he made it clear that the use of nuclear weapons would be disastrous for them.
