Argentina can qualify even if they win one of the next five matches or lose one match to Colombia, Chile and Uruguay. Argentina’s next match is against Brazil on the 17th.
Coach Lionel Scolari dropped the first XI without including the injured Lionel Messi. Messi came on as a substitute in the 76th minute but failed to find the back of the net. Messi was replaced by Paulo Dybala in the starting XI. Indications are that Messi could play full time against Brazil if he is fully fit.
Eligibility for Brazil
The top four finishers in the World Cup qualifying round will qualify directly from the Latin American region. Brazil are top with 34 points from 12 games and Argentina are second with 28 points from 12 games. Ecuador are third with 20 points and Chile are fourth with 16 points. Colombia is in fifth place. Uruguay, who lost to Argentina, are sixth.
