The source of the disease is Pointe-Noire, the country’s financial capital. Since the start of 2022, 5,488 cases have been reported in Pointe-Noire alone and 112 people have died from the fifth flu, according to figures released by the health minister.

Most of the deaths were due to delays in seeking treatment at the hospital. The government urged the people to be prepared to seek treatment at the hospital for those who show symptoms.

UNICEF and the World Health Organization had earlier warned of the possibility of a fifth outbreak.
