FIGHT AGAINST TERRORISM IN BURKINA: Huge security challenges hidden behind positive signals

Decidedly, Burkina Faso has trouble with its security. It’s the least we can say. Indeed, despite the commitment and determination of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) supported on the ground by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), the country continues to record deadly attacks by terrorists . Admittedly, the latter, with the new strategy put in place by the army, are no longer able to carry out spectacular attacks, but they still have a strong capacity for formidable nuisance. If fact that from East to West and from North to South, they manage to be talked about; as they continue to make victims. Witness the latest bloody attacks recorded in Mangodara in the Cascades and in Falagountou in the Sahel where respectively 15 and 13 people perished in attacks. If, in Falagountou, we can speak of reprisals on the part of armed groups which were driven out of the locality by the FDS to the ovations of the population, we cannot say the same for Mangodara where the modus operandi of the criminals of the times modern, questions. Because, apart from the women and children, all the men who were on board the two boarded buses, had their throats literally cut without any other form of trial. It feels like a Hollywood horror movie where the real generally rubs shoulders with the surreal. And yet, the scene is indeed taking place in Burkina Faso, once presented as a heavenly haven, and which today is going through the worst security crisis in its history.

We must continue the fight by cornering the enemy to its last entrenchments

Aware of the seriousness of the situation, the authorities resulting from the coup of September 30, have gone into overdrive by proceeding to a massive recruitment of VDP, thus giving a popular dimension to the war. This, it is said, certainly requires a lot of resources, in terms of support and equipment for these auxiliaries. But for the survival of the Nation, no sacrifice is too much. Quite the contrary! In any case, if it is true that the security challenge remains immense insofar as many localities continue to be emptied of their inhabitants, it is, however, necessary to recognize that the lines are moving all the same on the front of the fight anti-terrorist. Because, in addition to Falagountou, the Burkinabè flag has been flying for some time in Solenzo in the Boucle du Mouhoun and in Dablo in the Center-North. And that’s not all. Many localities under blockade, such as Pama and Titao, have been supplied. And very recently, about sixty women abducted in Arbinda were released by the FDS a week after their kidnapping. A feat rare enough to be underlined, especially when we see what is happening in other countries where the release of hostages most often drags on when they do not often end in a bloodbath. That said, when we know that terrorists are made in such a way that they cannot stand defeat or the loss of a battle, it is more than ever necessary for the combat units on the ground to keep their weapons at their feet. We must continue the fight by cornering the enemy to its last entrenchments. It is at this price that we will be able to redo Burkina, a paradise on earth where respect for human life will be the thing best shared.
