Fighting continues in Panchsheer; Defense forces kill more than 600 Taliban militants

Panchsheer: More than 600 Taliban militants have been killed in Afghanistan’s northeastern province of Panchsheer. Russia’s Sputnik news agency reported.

Fahim Dashti, a spokesman for the Defense Forces, tweeted that more than 1,000 Taliban militants had been captured or surrendered. The spokesman said the Taliban had been obstructing the delivery of essential supplies from other Afghan provinces. Meanwhile, the Taliban’s offensive against the Panchshir Defense Force has slowed down due to landmines in the area.

Al-Jazeera reported that fighting was continuing in Panchsheer but that progress had been slowed by landmines planted on the roads leading to the capital, Basra, and the provincial governor’s compound.

Panchsheer is the stronghold of the National Resistance Front, led by Ahmed Masood, the son of slain former Afghan guerrilla commander Ahmed Shah Masood, and former Vice President Amrullah Saleh. The Taliban’s inability to dominate the region despite seizing control of the country has been a major headache. Saleh had earlier said in a video message that the situation was dire and that they were facing severe attacks. He had said that the defense was continuing and that it would continue.
