The well-known American movie star Tom Cruise (Tom Cruise) returned the three Golden Globes Awards (Golden Globes Awards) he had won in protest against the lack of diversity behind the Hollywood film awards.
In recent months, the Golden Globes organization and selection agency “Hollywood Foreign Press Association” (Hollywood Foreign Press Association, referred to as HFPA) has fallen into a public relations crisis-the Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles Times) investigative report revealed that the Golden Globes jury has There were no black members for 20 years.
The National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) has been responsible for rebroadcasting the annual film awards, which is second only to the Oscar Film Awards since 1996, but the TV station has stated that it will not rebroadcast the Golden Globes next year.
NBC stated that it hopes to see “meaningful reforms” in HFPA.
“Time’s Up”, a sports organization that aims to promote the reform of the Hollywood industry, stated that NBC’s decision was “a defining moment in Hollywood.”
Tom Cruise is the latest star to join the boycott. Earlier, Scarlett Johansson (Scarlett Johansson) also criticized, saying that the Golden Globes require “fundamental reforms.”
WarnerMedia, Netflix and Amazon Studios have also refused to participate in all activities related to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The Golden Globes have recently claimed that they will carry out diversified reforms, but there are still many voices in the industry criticizing that the reforms are not thorough.
HFPA commits to reform
On Monday (May 10), the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association announced the timetable for the reform plan, stating that it will implement “change and transformation, and proceed as quickly and thoughtfully as possible”, and at the same time call this “systematic reform that should come long ago.” .
The agency also promised to “achieve these goals with the utmost urgency.”
The reform plan will expand the membership of the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association, focusing on recruiting black members and hiring consultants with diverse identities. The association promised to increase the number of members by 50% in the next 18 months.
The association also stated that it will publish the list of members to relax the confidentiality of its membership and lower the entry barrier for members, and accept foreign entertainment reporters working throughout the United States, instead of only accepting reporters who work in California as in the past.
All members will receive training on diversity, equality and inclusiveness, as well as training to increase awareness of sexual harassment prevention. In addition, members will be prohibited from receiving promotional materials from film and television producers.
Hollywood stars respond
“Time’s Up” described the reform proposal of the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association as a “pretty cliché.”
Tina Tchen, president of the “Time’s Up” organization, said: “Any organization or sponsor who thinks it has the ability to judge our dynamic creative talent group should do better.”
Scarlett Johansson, who was nominated for five Golden Globe Awards, called on other peers in the film industry to boycott this institution unless it makes major changes internally.
The 36-year-old Johnson recalled that he had faced “some questions and comments from members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association that contained sexist questions and comments that approached the level of sexual harassment.”
In “The Avengers” (The Avengers) film star Mark Ruffalo (Mark Ruffalo, Mike Rafalu), who worked with her, tweeted that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s reforms were “disheartening.”
“It’s time to stand up and change the past,” he said. “Frankly speaking, as the winner of the Golden Globe Awards in recent years, I cannot be proud and happy to receive this award.”
Is the reform not fast enough?
At present, the main problem is that the reform is not fast enough.
The timetable announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association shows that a new board of directors and new members will be in place in the first week of August.
In a statement on Monday, NBC stated: “This scale of change requires time and effort, and we strongly feel that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association needs time to do it right. Therefore, NBC will not be in 2022. Broadcast the Golden Globe Awards.”
“Assuming that the organization has implemented its plan, we hope that it will be suitable for broadcasting this program in January 2023.”
Before the TV station decided to stop broadcasting, the ratings of the Golden Globe Awards had plummeted and this year set a record low in 13 years. This is a general trend of major film awards ceremonies-especially during the global epidemic, many award ceremonies have cancelled red carpet events and are held online.
Sam Asi is a reporter in the Arabic Department of the BBC and a member of the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association. In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s “Today” program, he said that he felt strange that Hollywood was “suddenly shocked” at this time, but the fact that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has no black members “has been 20 years.”
“Hollywood actors, administrators, and publicists can see the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association every day…Why are you suddenly shocked now?”
He said: “The wind has turned into opposition to the Hollywood Foreign Correspondents Association. Everyone wants to follow the trend and get some benefits from it. This is a political game.”
He said that a publicist told him in private that they knew their field lacked diversity, and he had been in Hollywood for 15 years and had never seen a black publicist.
