[이뉴스투데이 이지혜 기자] In the first half of the year, messenger phishing victims showed a significant increase, especially among those in their 50s or older.

On the 5th, the Financial Supervisory Service disclosed the amount of phishing damage in the first half of the year. It is a compound word of phishing, private data, and fishing, and refers to electronic financial fraud through phone calls, messengers, and mobile phone text messages.

In the first half of this year, messenger phishing damage amounted to 46.6 billion won, up 165.4% from the first half of last year. It increased by 9.1% from 34.2 billion won in 2019 to 37.3 billion won in 2020, followed by a particularly rapid increase this year. Also, 93.9% of messenger phishing victims were in their 50s or older.

Fraudsters mainly impersonate their children, calling them ‘Dad’ and ‘Mom’, and indiscriminately send text messages approaching them saying ‘The phone screen is broken’. Then, ask them to add you as a Kakao Talk friend, and then ask for a photo of ID and financial transaction information such as account number and password. By installing malicious apps such as remote control apps and phone interception apps, the authentication code sent to the victim’s cell phone and personal information stored in the cell phone are intercepted. Using the stolen information, the application for damage relief is often delayed because the cannon phone is opened and financial transactions are made in the name of a new victim that the victim does not know.

An official from the Financial Supervisory Service said, “If you receive a message asking for identification, such as a son or daughter, through an unknown phone number or Kakao Talk, it is highly likely that the message is phishing.

In addition, the amount of voice phishing damage was 84.5 billion won, down 46.4% from the same period last year. The amount of damage caused by voice phishing is gradually decreasing from 672 billion won in 2019 to 235.3 billion won in 2020.

Among them, the number of people impersonating institutions such as prosecutors or pretending to borrow money greatly decreased, but the amount of messenger phishing damage that impersonated family members and acquaintances increased significantly.

An official from the Financial Supervisory Service said, “Under any circumstances, do not provide ID, account number, or password, and never touch the URL (remote control app).” You need to reset the phone or delete malicious apps.”

Meanwhile, the Financial Supervisory Service operates the personal information exposure accident prevention system, where you can log in to register personal information exposure and restrict the opening of new accounts and issuance of credit cards.
