First 25,000, again five days later; Ganesh says don’t hurt lorries

Kollam: KB Ganeshkumar MLA said that lorry drivers should not be harassed by the motor vehicle department officials during the Kovid period. The MLA was involved in a complaint that MVI misbehaved with a tipper lorry driver in Pathanapuram, Kollam and seized the vehicle. Sumesh, a native of Koodal Inchappara, had a mishap with the Pathanapuram Motor Vehicle Inspector yesterday.

It is alleged that the tipper lorry was seized and mistreated for being overweight. KB Ganeshkumar, who intervened in the matter, called MVI on the phone. Kovid asked drivers not to be harassed constantly during the period. He also directed to release the seized vehicle. Sumesh was fined Rs 25,000 in Kollam for overloading the lorry.

Five days later, the vehicle was caught again at Pathanapuram. Sumesh said MVI had misbehaved when he was told that he would not be able to live if he was fined again. There are also complaints that the tires of the lorry were damaged. A group of drivers and owners have come forward with complaints against the officer.

Ganesh Kumar assured the drivers that he would take up the matter with Minister Antony Raju. Sumesh also lodged a complaint with the police against the officer for misconduct. However, the MVI explained that the vehicle was seized for violating the law despite repeated warnings.
