First ultrafine dust advisory this fall… Today, the whole country is gray

[앵커]

Nationwide, the air quality is the worst this fall.

An ultra-fine dust advisory has been issued for the first time in six months in central and western areas such as Seoul.

Fine dust will be in trouble until today (21st) and is expected to be resolved at the beginning of the week.

The entire city center seen from Namsan is hazy.

Buildings look stuffy, trapped in gray dust.

It is difficult to distinguish even an inch ahead from the taller Lotte Tower.

It is quite different from a few days ago when the view to the mountains over the Han River was clear.

Air quality across the country is at its worst this fall.

In central and western areas such as Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi and Chungnam, ultrafine dust advisories were issued for the first time in six months since May.

The central region is three to five times higher than the usual ultrafine dust concentration, and the air quality is also showing poor air quality all over the southern part of the country.

This is because fine dust generated in Korea has accumulated in the atmosphere and pollutants from abroad have also been added.

High dust levels will continue throughout the weekend.

<장기원 / 대기질통합예보센터 예보관> “It is expected that the concentration of fine dust from the previous day will remain on the weekend and the fine dust generated in Korea will accumulate due to atmospheric stagnation.”

Citizens with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases, the elderly, and children are advised to refrain from going out as much as possible.

Air quality is expected to gradually improve with rain and strong cold winds at the beginning of the week.

However, unlike last year, when air quality was good due to reduced activity due to COVID-19, the air quality is highly likely to deteriorate again this winter as the amount of domestic movement and the inflow of dust from abroad such as China increase.
