Thiruvananthapuram | The one per cent cess imposed by the state government on the goods and services tax in the wake of the floods ended at midnight yesterday. The cess was imposed following the 2018 floods. With the abolition of cess, the prices of vehicles, electronics, gold and silver will go down. The state budget had said that the cess ending in July 2021 would not continue.
Flood cess was levied at one per cent on goods with GST above five per cent. The flood cess was a quarter of a percent for gold and silver. It was implemented from August 1, 2019. About Rs 1600 crore was to be collected through flood cess. The finance minister said the people should ensure that the flood cess is waived in their bills. With the abolition of cess, the price of these will go down
