Former LG Twins manager Ryu Joong-il was appointed as the head coach of the Korean national baseball team at the Hangzhou Asian Games.

The Korea Baseball Softball Association (KBSA) announced on the 23rd that it had appointed Ryu Joong-il, former LG Twins manager, as the national baseball coach to be dispatched to the 19th Hangzhou Summer Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China in September.

From January 26th to February 16th, the association recruited national team coaches and coaches through an open recruitment process, and held a meeting of the performance improvement committee on the 21st for the leaders who responded to the competition to evaluate the members of the performance improvement committee. did.

The association’s performance improvement committee, which was newly formed after being recommended by four members of the KBO Technical Committee, comprehensively evaluated the national team operation plan submitted by applicants, game management ability, and coaching ability, and finally selected Ryu Joong-il. The result of the selection of the national team coach will be confirmed after ratification at the 7th Board of Directors meeting in 2022 scheduled to be held in March.

Ryu served as the Samsung Lions manager from 2011 to 2016 and led the regular season championship for five consecutive years and the Korean Series for four consecutive years. From 2018, he took over as LG coach, and played in the fall baseball for two consecutive years, 2019 and 2020.

He also has rich national team experience. He took the baton of the 2013 World Baseball Classic (WBC) and in 2014 took over as manager of the Incheon Asian Games, leading them to the championship.

The Hangzhou Asian Games baseball event will be held from September 18 to 24. The top 2 countries in the preliminary round will join the top 6 countries in the Asian ranking, and a total of 8 countries will clash in the final round for gold medals.
