Mumbai: Royal Challengers Bangalore’s Virat Kohli’s dismissal during the IPL match against Mumbai Indians has sparked controversy. Kohli, who was batting on 48 off 35 balls, was on his way to his half-century when he was dismissed.

As Bangalore made their way to the crease, Kohli was caught in front of the wicket by South African youngster DeWald Brevis in the 19th over. It was Brevis’ first ball in the IPL. The field umpire decides that Brevis’ long ball hit the post of Kohli. Kohli took the review without any hesitation.

In the TV replay, it was only after the ball was edged by Collie’s bat that the footage appeared to hit the pad. However, the 3rd umpire felt that the ball had hit the bat and the pad at the same time. In cases where it is not possible to fully prove where the ball was first hit (no conclusive evidence was received), the 3rd umpire was not prepared to change the field umpire’s decision to call it a not out. The 3rd umpire also ruled that Kohli was out. In a fit of rage, Kohli returned to the pavilion.

Shortly after the incident, players, including former cricketer Aakash Chopra, took to the stage to comment on the controversial decision. ‘If the ball hits the bat and pad at the same time, it is considered to have hit the bat first. This is all I know. Let’s check the rules of cricket ‘- Chopra tweeted.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer said the ball was hit first by the bat and if he had, it would have definitely been ruled out. Former English batsman Nick Knight, who commented on the match live, reacted to Star Sports after the match by saying, “When I was in the commentary box I realized that there was a big inside edge in the case of Virat Kohli.” Former Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra has shared a picture of a pair of glasses with the caption ‘Those who think Kohli is out’ on Twitter.

Though Virat Kohli was out, Maxwell Brevis, who came to the crease later, beat Bangalore by two fours in a row.
