Former President Lee Myung-bak’s temporary release period extended by 3 months

Prosecutors decided on the 23rd to extend the temporary release period for former President Lee Myung-bak, who is serving his sentence in Anyang Prison by three months.

The Suwon District Prosecutors Office held a discussion committee on the stay of execution on the afternoon of the same day and accepted the request to extend the stay of execution, submitted by former President Lee on the 16th for health reasons.

According to the Criminal Procedure Act, a person who has been sentenced to prison, jail or detention must be: △ When his health is likely to deteriorate significantly; When a linear ascendant does not have a guardian, △When there are other serious reasons, and an application can be made to prevent the execution of the sentence.

Former President Lee was sentenced to 17 years in prison by the Supreme Court in October 2020 on charges of accepting large bribes from large corporations and embezzling company funds. Then, on June 28 this year, after one year and seven months of imprisonment, former President Lee was temporarily released due to a stay of execution.
